What the city is like after dark

Kanazawa nightlife is not about clubs. The tourism association describes it as a calmer night out than in Osaka or Tokyo, with a friendly feel in an area that is easy to find your way around.2 Evenings here revolve around food and drink: a counter, a few small plates, a glass of sake and conversation with whoever sits next to you.

The center of it is Katamachi. The tourism association calls the district the city's most popular nightlife spot and describes it as packed with bars and small restaurants.51 The Nishi Chaya District, one of the old teahouse quarters, sits right next to it, and you can mix a quiet stroll with a busy bar street in a single evening.5

Across the city, the Higashi Chaya District changes character in the evening. After 5:00 p.m. many of its cafes and shops close, gas lamps light the lanes, and restaurants and bars tucked into the alleys take over.4 Between those areas, a short taxi ride or a long walk links the whole evening. Start early with food, and leave the teahouse lanes for the end of the night, when they are at their quietest.

Katamachi and the lanes around it

Katamachi is where you go when you want choice. The tourism association pictures its bars and small restaurants as places for an exquisite meal and a cold beer or a warm cup of sake.1 Wander the side streets before you choose; a good evening often starts with a door you did not plan to open.

One evening tour builds its route around the district. The Kanazawa Night Foodie Tour starts outside a store in the Korinbo Ramoda building and walks through Katamachi to a kappo restaurant, an oden restaurant and a sake bar, over 3.5 hours. It also passes the samurai residential streets on the way, a quiet contrast to the bars.

If you go alone, look for a door with a menu outside, a noren curtain and a lit lantern. Look for a posted price list or a picture menu if you want to know the bill in advance. Sitting at the counter is the friendliest choice for a solo traveler: you watch the cooks, point at what looks good and are often drawn into conversation.

How an izakaya works

An izakaya in Kanazawa works like one anywhere in Japan, with local food on the menu. You sit, order a first drink, and then order small plates in waves to share: sashimi, grilled fish, yakitori, fried dishes and, here, oden. The tourism association says oden made with Kanazawa ingredients is served at many izakayas in the city.6

Do not worry about the language. At oden counters you often choose from a menu or a display and can simply point, and the same approach works for most small plates.7 Ask for jizake, local sake, by name, and let the staff choose. A table charge or a small appetizer you did not order may appear on the bill; it is normal.

Pace yourself. The point of an izakaya is to linger, not to eat a fixed meal, and a good evening may involve a second place for a last drink. That is exactly how the guided izakaya tour is built: a first restaurant, then a second stop chosen on the night by the guide.

Oden counters and hot sake

A warm way to spend a Kanazawa evening is at an oden counter. Oden, a hot pot of pieces simmered in broth, is a winter dish in much of Japan, but the tourism association says Kanazawa eats it all year, often with hot sake.3 The broth uses kombu, bonito and Ono soy sauce, which gives it a gentle sweetness.14

In early winter the pot has a star. The crab oden, a whole female snow crab, is served only from early November to late December.15 Popular oden places draw long lines, especially from autumn through winter; arrive at opening or come late.16

Order a few pieces at a time and ask what is local: kuruma-fu, the wheel of gluten, and Gensuke daikon, one of the Kaga vegetables, are good places to start.1718 An evening tour includes an oden restaurant as its middle stop, between a kappo dinner and a sake bar, if you would rather be guided.

The izakaya tour this page recommends

The Nighttime Izakaya Tour is the simplest way into an izakaya in Kanazawa with company. The guide waits in front of the Asanogawa Ohashi police box, and the evening runs 2.5 hours: an hour at a local restaurant, a 15-minute walk, then an hour at a second place. The listing names the first stop as a modern yakitori restaurant in the eastern part of the city.

The second stop is chosen on the night, a sake bar, a local bar or another izakaya, and a third stop may be added if time and the group allow. Groups are limited to 10 participants, the guide speaks English, multiple groups may be combined, and a private option exists.

It has 104 reviews with a 4.56 rating and starts from $26, and the booking can be held without paying at once and cancelled at no cost until 24 hours ahead. Check the listing for what the price covers, and bring cash for food and drinks beyond it.

Other evenings: dinner, sushi and a sake bar

If you want a full meal, a night tour meets at 18:00 at the same Asanogawa Ohashi police box, walks the geisha district, and sits down at 19:00 for a full-course set dinner with a choice of 6 menus and one drink; from 20:30 the night is yours. It starts from $106, with groups of up to 10.

For sushi, an evening tour takes you to a neighborhood sushi restaurant for 100 minutes, with the guide helping you order and explaining the ingredients. It starts from $26 and has 10 reviews.

For sake, the Kanazawa Night Foodie Tour ends at a sake bar with a tasting of three to five kinds, matcha and Japanese sweets. It is for guests over 20, asks for diet requests a day before, cannot cater for gluten-free diets and may visit places where smoking is allowed, from $140.

Teahouse lanes, river lights and the night market

Not every evening needs a bar. If you are wondering what to do in Kanazawa at night beyond eating, walk the teahouse districts. The tourism association says Higashi Chaya is the largest of the city's three historical geisha districts, where working teahouses stand beside restaurants, shops and cafes.19 There are only about 35 geisha left in Kanazawa; a glimpse of one is a rare moment.20

The city is lit all year, mostly from sunset to 9 or 10 p.m., and on Saturdays a light-up bus tours the illuminated sights.2122 A walk along the river from the Higashi Chaya District, with the lamps on and the shops closed, is a quiet pleasure after dinner.

Watch for food events too. The market's own site announced an Omicho night market on Saturday 3 October from 17:30 to 20:30, with about 20 shops selling along the fresh-fish street.23 Craft brewers add another option: Oriental Brewing, founded in 2016, brews with local ingredients such as Yuwaku yuzu and Kaga bocha.24
